“Art as a Means of Historical Inquiry:” Jonas Rüegg Receives ULF Open_Innovation Grant

The UZH Teaching Fund (ULF) has awarded a project grant for the period FS ’24-HS ’25 to the project “Art as a Means of Historical Inquiry.” The inter-university didactical research project offers students at the Department of History and the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) the opportunity to explore methodological interactions between historiography and art in a multidisciplinary collaboration. Through creative assignments, students explore various ways of observing, questioning and analyzing that are shaped by different media. What is an archive? What interests and power relations have left their mark on the records of the past? How do our possibilities as artists and historians change when we tap into new tools and media? Students pursue these and similar questions in close collaboration with instructors from both universities as they develop a multidisciplinary portfolio. The didactical methods developed as part of this project will be published on an interactive teaching and learning platform. They should encourage students to situate the humanities in a wider epistemic space characterized by unequal historical experiences and cultures of knowledge.

The project will take off this spring with the BA-Seminar “Art as a Means of Historical Inquiry” held at both UZH and ZHdK.
